| Abstract: | Though liquor consumption was not new to ancient and medieval Indians,but people felt that the British brought the same to increase the revenue.The revenue officials openly encouraged and often granted permission to open new liquor shops.This adversly affected the common man. Reformers undertook the task of cleansing the society of this evil and temperance movement became a neccessity. This paper is an effort to outline the temperance movement in Karnataka and the various leaders and organisations who spearheaded it.
